The Internet of Things in the Hospitality Industry

“We all have our time machines, the ones that take us back to the past are the memories, the dreams that lead us into the future.” H. G. Wells

For a long time, having a smart home or even a smart hotel room seemed like something out of a science fiction movie. Nowadays, we already live in this reality. As the installation of IoT devices grows, we will have better usability to control and personalize our environments.

The term Internet of Things (or IoT) was coined by Kevin Ashton in 1999 and means a network of connected objects.

In the not too distant future, all devices will have one or more connected sensors to report performance and other data to optimize systems. With IoT devices, we can have access to an abundance of information to make strategic decisions.

When we talk about the current state of IoT technology, the numbers are unbelievable. We have advanced a lot in a very short time. Last year, we reached 23 billion connected devices and will grow exponentially to 74 billion in 2025.

The Challenges for the Internet of Things Today

These figures are expected to grow considerably each year. However, the challenges of intelligently and efficiently handling data will be an ongoing issue. Below are some of the challenges.

5G

In Brazil, 5G connectivity will be arriving in 2020. That is good news for Zoox Smart Data HQ. There will be high-density connections with lower latency. As a result, it will bring new infrastructure that will boost IoT technology.

However, adapting companies to this new structure needs to be fast and efficient if certain companies want to have a competitive edge. With the gradual decline in device costs, the trend is the emergence of more IoT solutions in business.

Low Utilization

As you can see from IoT market stats, there is a vast amount of collected data by connected devices. Unfortunately, we do not take full advantage of this technology. As a result, most of this data ends up being lost as well as potential opportunities. By using intelligence, we can leverage the full flow of information.

Safety

Investing in the security of IoT services is also fundamental, especially when considering the serious cases in cities with network problems.

Unfortunately, this type of vulnerability happens when the system did not implement the necessary security measures. For example, a simple connected device can cause damage to the network.

Privacy Policy

It is now possible to know a lot about your customer. The debate about data privacy is on the world’s agenda. Facebook was a popular example of a company who suffered penalties for the vulnerability of their databases.

In addition, there is an increasingly urgent demand for clarification of the type of collected data. What information do companies have about you? And what will they do with it?
